How we protect your information.
Read-only access, encrypted in transit and at rest. OWN never sees your credentials. Here's what that means, and where the limits are.
- Read-only.OWN can see your accounts. It can't move money, pay bills or trade.
- No passwords.You sign in to your bank or brokerage through Plaid. OWN never sees your password.
- Encrypted.Your data is encrypted while it travels and while it's stored.
- Yours to delete.Close your account and your data is deleted right away.
Linking your accounts
OWN uses Plaid to link Canadian bank and brokerage accounts. You type your sign-in into Plaid, not into OWN. OWN only receives read-only access: balances, transactions and investments.
You can unlink your accounts at any time in Settings, under Connections.
Encryption
- Everything between your device and OWN is encrypted.
- Stored data is encrypted. Sensitive details, like your documents, holdings and transaction descriptions, get an extra layer of encryption with a key that's unique to you.
- Some details have only the standard layer: the answers you give during setup, transaction dates and amounts, any goals you set, and your email address.
- Atlas chats are kept in your browser, on the device you used, not in OWN's database.
OWN is not a "zero-knowledge" service: OWN holds the encryption keys. That means OWN's systems can read your data to show it to you, and a small number of authorized staff could access it if they had to, for example to fix a problem.
Signing in
- You can add a second step to sign-in with an authenticator app, in Settings. Once it's on, a password alone can't open your account.
- Staff tools inside OWN require that second step, and their use is logged.
- OWN doesn't sign you out automatically after a while. On a shared computer, sign out when you're done.
AI and your data
Atlas and a few other features use Anthropic's AI. What gets sent, and when, is set out in our Privacy Policy. Before any text is sent, OWN removes things like social insurance numbers, card numbers and passwords. Photos, scans and PDFs that can't be read as text are sent whole so they can be read, and are not screened.
What we don't do
- OWN does not sell your personal information.
- OWN has no ads. OWN is paid by members, not by product providers.
- OWN never moves your money.

Email support@ownfinancial.ca with "Security" in the subject. If we learn of a breach that puts you at real risk, we'll tell you and the Privacy Commissioner, as the law requires.
